Descriptions of Web Filter Pro Web Content Categories

1. ADULT CONTENT

Depiction of erotic or sexual acts of sexually oriented material such as pornography. Exceptions to this are web sites that contain information relating to sexuality and sexual health, which may be classified under the Health Sites Category (21). Examples:

2. NEWS

Information articles on recent events pertaining to topics surrounding a locality (eg. a town, city or nation) or culture, including weather forecasting information. Typically this would include most real-time online news publications and technology or trade journals. This does not include financial quotes, refer to the Investment Sites category (11), or sports, refer to the Sports category (16). Examples:

3. JOB SEARCH

Includes facilities to search for or submit online employment applications. This also includes resume writing and posting and interviews, as well as staff recruitment and training services. Examples:

4. GAMBLING

Includes advertisement or encouragement of, or facilities allowing for the partaking of any form of gambling; For money or otherwise. This includes online gaming, bookmaker odds and lottery web sites. This does not include traditional or computer based games; refer to the Games Sites category (10). Examples:

5. TRAVEL / TOURISM

Information relating to travel activities including travelling for recreation and travel reservation facilities. Examples:

6. SHOPPING

A web site may be classified under the Shopping category if its content includes any form of advertisement of goods or services to be exchanged for money, and may also include the facilities to perform that transaction online. Included in this category are market promotions, catalogue selling and merchandising services. Examples:

  • shopping.yahoo.com

7. ENTERTAINMENT

Any general form of entertainment that is not specifically covered by another category. Some examples of this are music sites, movies, hobbies, special interest, and fan clubs. This category also includes personal web pages such as those provided by ISPs. The following categories more specifically cover various entertainment content types, Pornography / Sex (1), Gambling (4), Chatrooms (8), Game Sites (10), Sports (16), Clubs and Societies (22) and Music Downloads (23). 8. CHATROOMS/INSTANT MESSAGING

A web site may be classified under the Chatrooms/Instant Messaging category if its content focuses on or includes real-time on-line interactive discussion groups. This also includes bulletin boards, message boards, online forums, discussion groups as well as URLs for downloading chat software. Examples:

9. DATING SITES

A web site may be classified under the Dating Sites category if its content includes facilities to submit and review personal advertisements, arrange romantic meetings with other people, mail order bride / foreign spouse introductions and escort services. Examples:

10. GAME SITES

A web site may be classified under the Game Sites category if its content focuses on or includes the review of games, traditional or computer based, or incorporates the facilities for downloading computer game related software, or playing or participating in online games. Examples:

11. INVESTMENT SITES

A web site may be classified under the Investment Sites category if its content includes information, services or facilities pertaining to personal investment. URLs in this category include contents such as brokerage services, online portfolio setup, money management forums or stock quotes. This category does not include electronic banking facilities; refer to the E-Banking category (12). Examples:

12. E-BANKING

Electronic banking information or services. This category does not include Investment related content; refer to the Investment Sites category (11). Examples:

18. VIOLENCE / UNDESIRABLE

Content that is extremely violent or horrific in nature. This includes the promotion, description or depiction of violent acts, as well as websites that have undesirable content and may not be classified elsewhere. Examples:

19. MALICIOUS

A web site may be classified under the Malicious category if its content is capable of causing damage to a computer or computer environment, including the unauthorized consumption of network bandwidth. Online proxy services used to evade filtering software are included in the Malicious category. Example:

20. SEARCH SITES

A web site may be classified under the Search Sites category if its main focus is providing online Internet search facilities. Refer to the section on special categories at the start of this document. Examples:

21. HEALTH SITES

A web site may be classified under the Health Sites category if its content includes health related information or services, including sexuality and sexual health, as well as support groups, hospital and surgical information and medical journals. Examples:

22. CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

A web site may be classified under the Clubs and Societies category if its content includes information or services of relating to a club or society. This includes team or conference web sites. Examples:

23. MUSIC/VIDEO

Online music or video downloading, uploading and sharing facilities as well as high bandwidth audio or video streaming. Examples:

  • musicmass.com
  • youtube.com
  • itunes.com

24. BUSINESS ORIENTED

A web site may be classified under the Business Oriented category if its content is relevant to general day-to-day business or proper functioning of the Internet, e.g. Web browser updates. Access to web sites in this category would in most cases not be considered unproductive or inappropriate.

25. GOVERNMENT BLOCKING LIST

This category is populated with URLs specified by a government agency, and contains URLs that are deemed unsuitable for viewing by the general public by way of their very extreme nature. Examples:

  • Child pornography sites
  • Bestiality sites
  • Rape sites

26. EDUCATIONAL

A web site classified under the Educational category may belong to other categories but has content that relates to educational services or has been deemed of educational value, or to be an educational resource, by educational organizations. This category is populated by request or submission from various educational organizations. Refer to the section on special categories at the start of this document. Examples:

27. ADVERTISING

A web site may be classified under the Advertising category if its main focus includes providing advertising related information or services. Examples:

28. DRUGS/ALCOHOL

A web site may be classified under the Drugs/Alcohol category if its content includes drug and alcohol related information or services. Some URLs categorized under this category may also be categorized under the Health category. Examples:

29. COMPUTING/IT

A web site may be classified under the Computing/IT category if its content includes computing related information or services. This includes traffic associated with facilities such as Microsoft Windows update. Examples:

30. SWIMSUIT/LINGERIE/MODELS

A web site may be categorized under the Swimsuit/Lingerie/Models category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images of swimsuit, lingerie or general fashion models. Examples:

31. REMOTE CONTROL/DESKTOP

A web site may be classified under the Remote Control/Desktop category if its content includes Remote Access Tools (RATS), remote desktop, remote system management/control, software information and/or services. Example: Citrix ICA clients, ICA, SSH, GoToMy PC etc.

A web site may be categorized under the Abortion category if its content includes information pertaining to Abortion, or images relating to Abortions. It includes health, scientific , pro and anti abortion material.

Academic Fraud*

A web site may be categorized under the Academic Fraud category if the site offers or appears to offer services related to Academic Fraud. This includes 3rd party assignment and/or essay writing or any other services aimed at assisting students or researchers to obtain academic qualifications fraudulently.

Alternative Sexual Life Styles (GLBT)*

A web site may be categorized under the Alternative Sexual Life Styles if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual or Transexual (GLBT) life styles. The category does not include any GLBT oriented sites that display pornography.

Animals:Pets*

A web site may be categorized under the Animals/Pets category if its content includes information pertaining to Animals, or images relating to Animals and/or Pets

Arts:Culture*

A web site may be categorized under the Arts/Culture category if its content includes information pertaining to the Arts/Culture, or images relating to the Arts/Culture

Audio Streaming Services*

A web site may be categorized under the Audio Streaming Services category if the site hosts or provides, an audio streaming service and/or software that facilitates audio streaming and/or information pertaining to online audio streaming. It does not include Radio, TV or other streaming media.

A web site may be categorized under the Auctions category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Auctions and/or, the site involves the auctioning of goods and/or services

Backups:Storage*

A web site may be categorized under the Backups/Storage category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Backup/Storage and/or if the site is providing an online Backup/Storage service

Botnets*

A web site may be categorized under the Botnets category if the site is currently participating in a Botnet and/or contains Botnet malware. Computer Security Sites that have information relating to Botnets will be classified under IT Security

Charities*

A web site may be categorized under the Charities if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Charities

Chat Rooms*

A web site may be categorized under the Chatrooms category, if the site primarily hosts or provides Chat room services and/or its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Chat Rooms.

Child Entertainment*

A web site may be categorized under the Child Entertainment category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Child Entertainment

Child Pornography*

A web site may be categorized under the Child Pornography category if its content includes Child Pornography. This content is illegal in most jurisdictions in most countries.

Dictionary*

A web site may be categorized under the Dictionary category if the site is a dictionary site or a site offering similar services, has information and/or images about dictionaries and or dictionary sites.

Drugs:illicit*

A web site may be categorized under the Drugs:illicit category if its content includes information/material/products and/or images that promote or facilitate the use of drugs that are illegal in most jurisdictions. This does not include health information relating to medical use or general use of otherwise illegal drugs.

Drugs:Pharmaceuticals*

A web site may be categorized under the Drugs/Pharmaceuticals category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to legal drugs/pharmaceuticals.

Dynamic DNS*

A web site may be categorized under the Dynamic DNS category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to and/or is providing a Dynamic DNS service.

Educational Games*

A web site may be categorized under the Educational Games category if its content includes software and/or information pertaining to, or images relating to, or is an actual gaming sites that is intended for an Educational audience.

Embedded Threats*

A web site may be categorized under the Embedded Threats category if its content includes embedded malware. This includes sites that may otherwise be legitimate sites that are currently infected with some form of malware.

Fashion*

A web site may be categorized under the Fashion category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Fashion.

Government*

A web site may be categorized under the Government category if the site is run by any government authority (federal,state, local or national). It includes most .gov sites

Guns:Weapons*

A web site may be categorized under the Guns/Weapons category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Weapons.

Hacking*

A web site may be categorized under the Hacking category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to and/or tools to assist with illegal Hacking. Information relating to malware protection and/or defence against hacking and/or defence against malware is contained within the IT Security category.

Hobbies*

A web site may be categorized under the Hobbies category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Hobbies.

Hosted Services*

A web site may be categorized under the Hosted Services category if the site provides hosted services or hosting services and/or its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to, hosted services .

Humor*

A web site may be categorized under the Humor category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Humor. eg joke sites

ISPs*

A web site may be categorized under the ISPs category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

IT Forums:Blogs*

A web site may be categorized under the IT Forums/Blogs category if the site hosts or provides a Internet Forum or Internet Log (BLOG) containing articles, images and/or information pertaining to Information Technology.

IT Security*

A web site may be categorized under the IT Security category if its content includes information/software pertaining to, or images relating to Information Technology Security and/or Internet Security.

Keyloggers*

A web site may be categorized under the Keyloggers category if the site contains or may contain keylogging software and or information to facilitate key logging activities, designed for malicious purposes.

Media:File Sharing*

A web site may be categorized under the Media Sharing category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to or the provision of file and/or other media sharing services.

Military*

A web site may be categorized under the Military category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Military services and/or equipment designed for military use.

Nudity*

A web site may be categorized under the Nudity category if its content includes non-pornographic information pertaining to, or images relating to or depicting nudity .

Pay to Surf*

A web site may be categorized under the Pay to Surf category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to, or the facilitation of any pay to surf activity.

Peer To Peer*

A web site may be categorized under the Peer To Peer category if its content includes information pertaining to, images relating and/or software designed to facilitate Peer To Peer activity. e.g.. Limewire

Personal*

A web site may be categorized under the Personal category if its content includes information and/or images relating to a particular individual. This does not include social networking sites.

Phishing:Frauds*

A web site may be categorized under the Phishing/Frauds category if its contains or may contain phishing and/or malware code designed to trick the victim for the purpose of fraud.

Proxies:Filtering Bypass*

A web site may be categorized under the Proxies and Filtering Bypass category if the site is a by pass proxy server or provides software designed to hide the users identity or the source of any browsing traffic.

Radio*

A web site may be categorized under the Radio category if the site provides access to online streaming radio and/or provides software designed to facilitate the streaming of online radio.

Real Estate*

A web site may be categorized under the Real Estate category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Real Estate.

Restaurants:Dinning Food*

A web site may be categorized under the Restaurants/Dinning Food category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to eating out.

Sex Education*

A web site may be categorized under the Sex Education category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to sex education.

ShareWare:FreeWare*

A web site may be categorized under the ShareWare/FreeWare category if the site provides access to Share Ware or Free Ware. Sites that do provide free/share software commonly used by professional IT staff are excluded and come under Computing/IT.

Social Networking*

A web site may be categorized under the Social Networking category if its provides an online social networking service.

Software Downloading:Sharing*

A web site may be categorized under the Software Downloading/Sharing category if the site provides a hosting and downloading service for multiple software authors .

Spam URLs*

A web site may be categorized under the Spam URLs category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to spamming.

Special Events*

A web site may be categorized under the Special Events category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to specific special events.

Spyware*

A web site may be categorized under the Spyware category if its content includes spyware.

Stock Trading*

A web site may be categorized under the Stock Trading category if its provides the ability to trade stocks online.

Surveillance Monitoring Site Cams*

A web site may be categorized under the Surveillance Monitoring Site Cams category if the site provides access to video cams.

Suspicious*

A web site may be categorized under the Suspicious category if it hosts or appears to host suspicious content or suspicious software.

Text Messaging*

A web site may be categorized under the Text Messaging category if its purpose is to send and/or receive text or SMS messages to mobile and/or other devices.

Tobacco*

A web site may be categorized under the Tobacco category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Tobacco.

Unions:Professional Organisations*

A web site may be categorized under the Unions & Professional Organisations category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Unions and/or Professional Organisations.

TV*

A web site may be categorized under the TV category if the sites provides online streaming generic TV services and /or software applications designed to facilitate online streaming of Television programs.

Video*

A web site may be categorized under the Video category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to Video (eg. YouTube, Vimeo).

Viral Video*

A web site may be categorized under the Viral Video category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to online videos that have gone viral.

Weather*

A web site may be categorized under the Weather category if its content includes information pertaining to, or images relating to the weather.

* Please note these categories were introduced with ContentKeeper Web Filter Pro and ContentKeeper Secure Web Gateway (Version 160.00 onwards). Some previously categorised sites may now fall under one of the new category definitions. These sites are in the process of being moved to their new categories. During this process those sites may appear within both their old and new categories.
